List of Facts / Trivia:
1. Gabriel is a sensation all over the world
Even though a lot of Iglesias’ comedy is centered on what it was like to grow up Hispanic in America, he is extremely well received all over the globe and has performed in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Australia and Saudi Arabia.
2. Iglesias’ family urged him not to go into comedy
Like a lot of comedians, Gabriel Iglesias initially faced pushback from his family when he told them about his plans to go into comedy. He was working for a cell phone company in LA when he decided to make the change and his family thought it was foolish to put such financial security at risk.
3. The transition wasn’t easy
Although he was able to give his job and comedy equal attention for a while, he eventually quit the former to pursue the latter. As a result, he was evicted and lost his car. Nonetheless, he kept doing comedy.
4. Gabriel was kicked off Last Comic Standing
In 2006, Gabriel Iglesias achieved a new level of fame when he became a contestant on the fourth season of “Last Comic Standing.” Although he was a fan favorite and survived to become one of the final eight contestants, he was eventually disqualified when he was caught using a Blackberry – which he had smuggled in – to communicate with his family and friends. This was against the rules.
5. Iglesias Has His Own Show
Although that show didn’t work out, Iglesias now has his own on Fuse TV called “Fluffy Breaks Even.”
6. The first special he did was a hit
Back in 2003, Gabriel taped his first half-hour Comedy Central Presents special. Not only was it a huge success, but viewers voted it the “Half-Hour Special of the Year.”
7. So was his first hour-long special
It would be four years before he would do his first hour-long special, but when “Hot and Fluffy” was released, it went triple platinum.
8. Gabriel Has Battled Weight Issues
The famous comedian has made his weight a major part of all of his specials. It’s how he got the nickname we mentioned earlier, “Fluffy Man.” However, when he hit 445 pounds, his doctor diagnosed him with Type II Diabetes and told him he had two years to live. Iglesias has since lost 100 pounds and made a lot of changes to his lifestyle.
9. Iglesias is in a special class of comedian
He can stand alongside legends like Steve Martin, Kevin Hart, Andrew Dice Clay and Aziz Ansari as he is one of a small number of comedians who have taken the stage at Madison Square Garden.
10. Speaking of stages…
Gabriel Iglesias also got a lot of attention when he landed parts in both “Magic Mike” and “Magic Mike XXL.”
