List of Facts / Trivia:
Anna Akana is a YouTube star, but a whole lot more. She has become a prime example of what’s possible in terms of using new forms of media available to everyone thanks to the Internet. If you haven’t seen her work before, you’re in for a treat, but first, check out these 10 facts about her.
1. Anna started with standup
Before she became a YouTube sensation with more than a million subscribers, Akana did standup comedy. However, she started having severe panic attacks and anxiety before taking the stage so she switched to YouTube. Thankfully, Anna has gone back to doing standup as well.
2. She is an outspoken advocate for suicide prevention
On Valentine’s Day 2007, Anna’s 13-year-old sister committed suicide. Anna is very vocal on the topic and, in 2013, released a video entitled, “Please don’t kill yourself.” She also authored a book that came out that same year. Surviving Suicide is a collection of her journal entries from the two years following the incident.
3. Seeing Margaret Cho perform helped her through this time
Months after her sister’s death, she laughed for the first time when watching a Margaret Cho special on Comedy Central. This was her inspiration for pursuing comedy as she saw it as a means of helping her move on with her life.
4. Akana is in a band
In 2014, she founded a comedy music duo with another comedian and writer, Megan Rosati. The two call their band Cat Benatar.
5. Her YouTube channel features six short films made in one year
As a means of improving her directorial skills, she set a goal for herself in 2014 to create one short film every single month. Although she fell short, she still completed six which were all well-received by her audience.
6. Akana is in mainstream media as well
In 2011, she appeared on the show “Awkward.” Then, in 2015, she appeared in “Kids vs. Monsters” and “Ant-Man.” In 2016, she shared the screen with Sally Field in the independent comedy, “Hello, My Name Is Doris.” The movie was written by comedian Michael Showalter.
7. Anna has her own clothing line
Her clothing line came out in 2015. Ghost & Stars features leggings, t-shirts and dresses, many of which have a cat theme.
8. And her own podcast
Proving that she is taking advantage of every form of media available, Akana also has her own podcast with comedian Brad Gage. During “Explain Things to Me,” the two hosts interview experts from all different kinds of fields and ask them about what their jobs entail.
9. Originally, she was going to join the military
As the daughter of a Marine who constantly moved the family around from base to base, Anna grew up with the expectation that she would join the military as well. Obviously, she eventually had other ideas and has pursued them with reckless abandon.
10. The future is bright
Despite all she has accomplished, Anna Akana is still hard at work. She does comedy all over Los Angeles, hosts a standup night and still has her podcast, YouTube channel and short film career.
