His parents are Irina (née Korina) and Viktor Yelchin and they were figure skaters who were celebrities as stars of the Leningrad Ice Ballet for 15 years. He best known roles were Bobby in Hearts in Atlantis (2001), Chekov in the Star Trek (2009) reboot, Charlie Brewster in the Fright Night (2011) remake, and Jacob in Like Crazy (2011).

On June 18, 2016, Yelchin set out to meet his friends, they were about to do a rehearsal. After not hearing from him for hours, his friends went to his home in Studio City at 1 a.m. and found Yelchin pinned between his car and a brick wall. His driveway is on an incline and his car was found still running and in neutral. The following day he was pronounced dead. He was 27.
