Additional Facts, Statistics, and Data About
Kelly Brianne Clarkson was born in April 1982 in Fort Worth, Texas. At high school she sang in her school choir and after graduating in 2000, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. After a succession of odd jobs, Kelly secured a job as female vocalist for songwriter Gerry Goffin, but a run of bad luck saw her return to Texas, where a friend told her about a new FOX talent show, ‘American Idol.’ Kelly was soon was of 10,000 who auditioned for the show.
In 2002, in front of judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson, Kelly beat Justin Guarini to become the first American Idol. She was rewarded with a $1 million recording contract at RCA, and saw her first single, ‘A Moment Like This’ jump from #52 to #1 in the Billboard charts. Her first album, ‘Thankful’ was a success, driven by the smash hit single, ‘Miss Independent.’
In 2003, Kelly appeared in the somewhat forgettable film ‘From Justin to Kelly’ (she had also previously appeared in a small indie flick in 2002). Her second album, ‘Breakaway’ snagged her two Grammy awards, and spawned a run of smash singles, including ‘Breakaway’, ‘Because of You’, and ‘Since U Been Gone.’ In 2007, Kelly was working on a new album, ‘My December’ on which she had co-written many of the songs. Kelly wanted to take the album in a different direction, leading to a clash with her producer Clive Davis and, ultimately, the firing of her management and cancellation of a concert tour scheduled for the summer of 2007. Kelly would later express regret over this time and publicly praise her former colleagues for their support.
In 2009, Kelly released the album ‘All I Ever Wanted’; the debut single, ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ jumped from #97 to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, breaking the previous record for largest jump in the charts (which also belonged to Kelly for her first single, ‘A Moment Like This’). The song went on to become #1 in the U.S.,selling a massive 255,000 copies in the first week alone. In 2011, Kelly released the album ‘Stronger’ and grabbed another U.S. #1 (her third) with the hit ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You). She followed this up with a Greatest Hits compilation in 2012 and the Holiday album ‘Wrapped in Red’ in 2013. This year, she released ‘Piece by Piece’, and its first single, ‘Heartbeat Song’.
After dating singers Graham Colton and Ryan Key, in December 2012 Kelly tweeted her engagement to Brandon Blackstock, the son of her manager Narvel Blackstock and the stepson of country superstar Reba McEntire. The pair were wed in October 2013 in Tennessee with Brandon’s children Savannah and Seth as witnesses. In November of that year, the newlyweds announced Kelly was pregnant with their first child. They had a daughter, River Rose, in June 2014.
Kelly is a petite 5ft 3in tall (161 cm) and weighs 174 lbs (79kg). She wears a US size 12, with measurements of 37-31-37. She wears a US 7 shoe, and her bust size measures in at 34C. Although a natural brunette, Kelly currently sports honey-blond hair. She is an ambassador for high-end brand Citizen Watches. Since the start of her career, Kelly has been the target of ‘fat shaming’ comments in the media, but has always maintained her priority is to stay happy and healthy. She works with trainer Nora James, who specialises in nurturing the mind-body connection of her clients, and has adopted a varied routine of strength training, hiking, and boxing. After the birth of her daughter last year, Kelly was again subjected to comments in the media about her pregnancy weight gain, but elegantly dismissed them in an interview with the May edition of Redbook, saying that she does not obsess about her weight and that ‘she’d rather have wine.’
