List of Facts / Trivia:
1. Before “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” Conan wrote for shows
Specifically, he wrote for “The Simpsons” and “Saturday Night Live.” He even made a few appearances on the latter over the years. Prior to writing for television, Conan was a standup comedian.
2. Both of O’Brien’s parents were extremely successful
The future host of the Tonight Show was born Conan Christopher O’Brien in Brookline, Massachusetts on April 18, 1963. His dad is Dr. Thomas O’Brien, a renowned epidemiologist and the head of Peter Brigham Hospital’s microbiology wing. His mom, Ruth Reardon O’Brien, was a lawyer and partner at Ropes & Gray before retiring in 1997. Conan also has three brothers and two sisters and his cousin is the comedian Denis Leary.
3. Conan went to Harvard
While Conan is known as a skilled writer with a sharp wit, many are surprised to learn he went to Harvard University. The comedian graduated in 1985 with a BA in American History. Still, he showed his comedy chops early on as he was twice elected as the president of The Harvard Lampoon.
4. His first job was with HBO
Before he ever wrote for “SNL” or “The Simpsons”, O’Brien moved out to LA and got a job writing for the HBO show “Not Necessarily the News.”
5. O’Brien was an unknown when he took over for Letterman
After Carson announced his retirement, Jay Leno was announced as his successor and David Letterman – whose show followed Carson’s – left for CBS. While countless comedians and other personalities applied for the job, it was Conan who ended up getting it, despite the fact that he was virtually an unknown at the time and had very little experience in front of the camera.
6. But Conan persevered
If Conan had bent to the pressure to conform, he probably wouldn’t have made it long. At first, the show was only renewed for 13 weeks at a time to limit NBC’s commitment. However, O’Brien kept up with his self-effacing, off-center humor and became a huge hit with younger audiences.
7. It still took four years for the big contract
O’Brien hosted Late Night for four years before NBC finally gave him a respectable five-year contract.
8. His next transition did not go as smoothly
When Jay Leno announced his retirement, O’Brien was tapped to take over for him and moved his show to Los Angeles. Leno got a new show right before “The Tonight Show”, but poor ratings caused NBC to try shifting the programming schedule. Conan refused to go along with the switch and eventually left for his own show on TBS, “Conan.”
9. Conan met his wife on set
His wife Liza Powell appeared in a skit on “Late Night” in 2000. They dated for a year before announcing their engagement and now have two children.
10. Tom Hanks gave him his nickname
Once, on an episode of “The Tonight Show”, the Oscar-award-winning actor referred to Conan as “Coco” a nickname O’Brien hoped wouldn’t stick. It has.
